The theory of communication competency measures the degree to which the goals of interaction in communication are achieved.  Because the function of communication is to maximize and ensure shared meaning, communication competency is important as it emphasizes three interdependent themes: control, responsibility, and foresight.  Spitzberg and Cupach designed a model for understanding communication competency, which illustrates the interdependency of the cognitive, behavioral, and affective components.  In 2000, Canary and Cody created six criteria for assessing competence: adaptability, conversational involvement, conversatinal management, empathy,  effectiveness, and appropriateness (www.uky.edu).
