The system theory describes groups as being open systems that are influenced by independent variables such as input, processes, output, environment, and interdependence.  In the field of communication, there are three interrelated theoretical legacies, including information theory, cybernetics, and general systems theory.  Briefly, information theory refers to the idea that uncertainity is reduced when information is acquired.  Cybernetics is a science that is concerned with the transmission and control of information as it examines the manipulation of information in different systems.  Finally, the general systems theory is used to explain the behavior of a variety of complex, organized systems (www.uky.edu).
