Irving Janis

Irving Janis was a renowned research psychologist and scientist who has been remembered in the communication field for his theory of groupthink, a concept centered around the idea that groups make systematic errors when partaking in collective decision-making.  Prior to his establishment of this theory, Janis contributed greatly to social learning theory, field theory, and psychoanalysis due to his extensive and original research in social psychology (Trahair 2004).  Author Richard C. S. Trahair states that because of his commitment to research, "his work was noted for its integration of leadership, cognition in decision and policy-making, and the application of social psychological theory to contemporary issues, for example, peace and social justice" (1994).
