Phatic communication is communication that is primarily social rather than informational.  It refers to the "small talk" that is used to open the channels of communication for more meaningful interaction.  This helps to maintain the relationship as it ensures that there is access between the individuals involved (DeVito, 2005). 

Examples:

Hi! How are you?
You're welcome.
Smoking or non-smoking?
It's a nice day outside.
