Public speaking (or a public address) is a form of communication in which a speaker addresses an audience of a relatively large size (usually in a face-to-face situation) and presents a continuous discourse.  This can include a student giving a presentation to the class, an employee presenting an idea to colleagues, or a politician addressing a large crowd.  In order to prepare a public speech, there are ten steps that are typically involved in order to create an effect address: (1) select a topic and purpose, (2) analyze the audience, (3) research the topic, (4) formulate a thesis and identify major propositions, (5) support the major propositions, (6) organize the information, (7) word and title the speech, (8) construct the conclusion and introduction, (9) rehearse the speech, and (10) deliver the speech (DeVito, 2005).
