A seminar is a format often used in small-group discussions that addresses a particular issue.  The structure and concept of a seminar dates back to the ancient Greeks when Plato used this type of group as a teaching format.  His students would take turns discussing central issues or questions, and Plato would then deliver the important lessons derived from the comments made.  Seminars today remain an important format in places of higher education.  There are regular meetings over a particular period of time, clear organization, and an intellectual leader who coordinates and encourages the discussion among students (DeFleur, 2005).
