Sender-receiver reciprocity rests on the idea that the message's sender and receiver have similar experiences in their language community as they have acquired parallel meanings for verbal and nonverbal signs and symbols.  Thus, when a person tries to comprehend what an individual is saying, he/she will either succeed or fail, depending on whether both individuals hold similar meanings for the experience.  Effective listening plays a role in this idea as it reflects a person's ability to recall a previous experience that reflects and relates to the source's message (DeFleur, 2005).
